Team spirit saw us home, says Worth

George Worth praised Leicester Tigers' team spirit as they held off a late Bath Rugby fightback at The Rec to win their opening game of the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

Tigers held a 21-8 lead on the hour after tries for Luke Hamilton, his first for Tigers, and George Catchpole, his second in as many games.

But Bath took advantage of a yellow card for replacement prop Pat Cilliers on his debut and the disruption caused by a number of enforced changes to the Tigers XV to get back to within a point.

But Tigers controlled the closing stages, finishing on the attack inside the Bath 22, to see out the game and get their Cup campaign off to a winning start.

Academy graduate Worth, who joined Argentina international Tomas Leonardi in making his first start for the club, said: “The spirit with these boys was unreal.

“A lot of us have come through the Academy together. A lot of us have played ‘A’ League together. You can probably tell from the way we defended that we were all out there for each other and it paid off in the end.

“The boys are happy with the result. We spoke in the week about coming here, coming firing, the history between the clubs, previous results not going our way.

“For us, it was an opportunity to put a stake in the ground individually and as a team, and I think we did that.”

Tigers are back in Anglo-Welsh Cup action on Saturday when they take on Newport Gwent Dragons at Welford Road. Kick-off is at 3pm.

The game is included on the Tigers season ticket. Match tickets are available now from the Welford Road ticket office, online by clicking here and on 0116 319 8888 (option 2).
