Blaze happy with second win in cup

Richard Blaze says Leicester Tigers players will take a lot of positives out of their opportunity to shine in the two weeks of Anglo-Welsh Cup competition.

Tigers followed up a 21-20 win at Bath in the opening round with a 42-3 victory over Newport Gwent Dragons on Saturday to top Pool 4 of the cross-border competition.

Forwards coach Blaze, in charge of the team for the second round fixture as part of the tournament’s developmental role for players and staff, said: “You’ve got to trust your squad and there are some young guys who really stood up over the two weeks. Those young guys have done themselves some good.

“There have been some great performances over the two weeks and it was important to back up the performance from last week. The young guys brought that enthusiasm and the other guys get a buzz off that.

“We wanted to give everybody a bit of gametime if we could and we wanted to carry on from last week with our physicality and workrate. We squeezed them at the set-piece and that allowed us to play. When you make multiple changes you lose a bit of momentum but ultimately we got the win and we are sitting comfortably in the table.

“It’s a good win and we stopped them scoring a try, but for me it is a positive as a coach that the players also think there could have been more. We think we could have been a bit more ruthless.”

Tigers now revert to a vital part of the Aviva Premiership season with three games during the autumn international period, beginning at home to Harlequins on Sunday.

“We’re pleased we got the performance and that we got through without any injuries, and now we move on to Quins,” said Blaze. “It’s huge few weeks with Quins, then a short turnaround to Bristol and then Saints at home.”

Tickets for Tigers versus Harlequins on Sunday (3.15pm) and Northampton Saints on Saturday, December 3 (5pm) are on general sale now to all supporters. Book at the ticket office at Welford Road, phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2) or click here to book online.
