Charnwood Community Safety Partnership has teamed up with the Leicester Tigers Foundation to offer a group of Year 8 and 9 students the chance to gain sports qualifications, learn the game of rugby and pick up important life and work skills with the launch of a new innovative rugby scheme.

The Charnwood Dynamite Programme will work with chosen youngsters to divert young people away from anti-social behaviour, working at the Tigers Education Centre set in the heart of the club’s Welford Road stadium.

Cllr Jonathan Morgan, Chairman of the Safety Partnership, said: “We are delighted to team up with Leicester Tigers to offer young people such a positive programme.

“I hope those taking part will relish this opportunity and get stuck in. Not only can they gain qualifications, but hopefully they will learn important skills which they can take into other areas such as education and, in the future, the workplace.

“Playing rugby at the highest level requires incredible discipline and professionalism – qualities which can be used in other areas of life.

“Those chosen to take part may have been on the edge of anti-social behaviour and the aim of this programme is to give them some focus and divert their energies into something more positive.”

The programme has been funded by a grant from the Leicestershire Police and Crime Commissioner’s office.

During the 23-week programme, the young people will attain accredited sports qualifications covering topics such as strength & conditioning and health & nutrition. They will also take part in practical sport and leisure activities, leadership sessions and gain employability skills.
