Youngs hails England competition for places

Ben Youngs says the competition for places with England is getting the best out of everyone.

Youngs produced a man-of-the-match performance in England’s 37-21 victory against Australia at Twickenham on Saturday.

The Leicester Tigers scrum-half crossed for an excellent opportunist try in the second-half that effectively won the game for England and was a constant threat to the Australia defence, as he has been all autumn.

The win ensured England went through 2016 with a 100 per cent winning record and Youngs says their run of form owes much to the competition for places in the squad.

“Eddie (head coach Eddie Jones) just gets guys in and he makes sure they turn up and perform,” says Youngs.

“It’s exciting. Look at New Zealand over the years. They have one guy comes out and a new guy comes in and I really feel we are getting like that here now.

“One guy can come out, for whatever reason, someone comes in and fills those shoes and puts pressure on. It’s competition for places. It’s brilliant. It’s making us perform as a side,” Youngs told the English Rugby Podcast.

Youngs and England teammate Dan Cole have returned to Tigers after their exploits with England over the autumn internationals.

Welcome them back to Welford Road at the Champions Cup game against Munster Rugby on Saturday, December 17. Match tickets are no sale now on 0116 319 8888 (option 2) or online by clicking here.
