Derby Day in the Big Boot too

The Ultimate Big Boot hosted a second big derby of the day at Welford Road on Saturday.

As Leicester Tigers were on their way to an Aviva Premiership derby victory over  Northampton Saints, two Leicestershire rugby clubs went head to head in The Ultimate Big Boot at half-time.

Members of the Oadby Wyggestonian and Stoneygate clubs tested themselves against the Big Boot and against each other.

Sponsored by De Montfort University, The Ultimate Big Boot challenges teams to catch rugby balls fired high into the Welford Road sky and stake a claim to a jackpot prize which started the season at £2,000 for a cleansweep of 10 catches, while also providing an unforgettable opportunity for supporters to experience a matchday in front of a big crowd at Welford Road.

Going first in front of a Derby Day crowd of almost 25,000 supporters, a young group from Oadby Wyggs were unable to make a catch, despite getting hands to a number of their 10 shots.

Stoneygate took the derby honours with three successful catches, though they were still some way short of the season’s best of six scored by Uttoxeter Rugby Club at half-time in the match against Bath back in September.

Marcus Roberts was one of Stoneygate’s successful catchers and said: “It’s been a great experience. It’s fantastic for us all to be here today, we really have loved it.”

Rich Green, coach at Oadby Wyggs, said: “It’s been a great day out and they’ve all had a good time going on the pitch. We’re always looking for new players – hopefully ones that can catch!”

The Ultimate Big Boot is available to Tigers group bookings on matchday throughout the season. Participants must be aged 14 or over. All participants receive a Big Boot T-shirt as a souvenir. For more information, phone the Tigers Group Days team on 0116 2171 216.
