Leicester Tigers club mascot Welford was invited to attend Christmas lunch at schools on the Nottingham Building Society tag rugby programme this week.

The Nottingham Building Society tag rugby programme is a free scheme run by Tigers coaches over five weeks in schools during children’s PE time and with a final festival bringing together different schools at a local rugby club.

The programme is currently running in Melton Mowbray where the children have been enjoying the interaction with Tigers so much that their schools invited Welford to go for Christmas lunch during the last week of term.

Tigers are delighted to continue our initiative with The Nottingham and their Tag Rugby Programme which creates an opportunity for primary school children to receive professional coaching.

During the sessions Tigers Community coaches work with children to develop and improve their rugby knowledge and skills in a fun and active environment, encouraging healthy lifestyles and incorporating positive values that come from the Tigers training ground.

In the first year of the programme Tigers involved more than 50 schools in and around Leicestershire, coaching and introducing tag rugby to 2,000 Year 3 and 4 children thanks to support from The Nottingham Building Society.

The move to Melton Mowbray has been a great success with 10 schools taking part and all of them have confirmed their attendance at the Tag Rugby Festival at the town’s rugby club on January 20 when 130 children will take part.
