Away win for Brooksby Melton College team

The Leicester Tigers and Brooksby Melton College Rugby Academy team picked up a second away win in the Association of Colleges West Midlands League on their trip to Newcastle-Under-Lyme.

Following recent success including lifting the silverware at the East Midlands College Sevens in November, the team celebrated 29-26 victory at Newcastle-Under-Lyme College.

With the home team only able to gather 12 players due to illness and unavailability after the Christmas break, BMC were able to loaned them three players to contest a competitive 15-a-side fixture.

A high penalty count against BMC kept the hosts in the game, but tries from Charlie Read (2), Noah Reeve, George Willmott and Jack Stokes plus two conversions from Matt Steward gave the visitors a 29-14 lead at half-time.

Changes were made for both teams in the second half with the only scores in second half going to the home side – by their BMC-loaned players.

The game provided an opportunity for some of the BMC players to try out new positions with a converted centre, Connor Robson-Wild, playing his first game at hooker and Morgan Galloway moving from wing to back row.

BMC have four more fixtures before half-term including the return game against Newcastle- Under-Lyme and a derby game away to Loughborough College.

Tigers formed a partnership with Brooksby Melton College to launch a Rugby Academy during the 2014/15 season. The BMC Rugby Academy is part of a growing partnership with the college which sees Tigers community and Leicester Tigers Foundation staff working with staff to offer inclusive rugby-themed coaching and education linked programmes.

Rugby Academy students benefit from 10 hours of specialist Tigers rugby coaching alongside their BTEC Level 3 qualification in sport.
