Head coach Aaron Mauger welcomed the signing of George Ford for next season and says the best years are still ahead of the quartet of Leicester Tigers who have agreed new contracts with the club.

Tigers yesterday announced that England fly-half Ford will return to the club next season and that Freddie Burns will move to his hometown club Bath Rugby.

It followed the news earlier in the week that Brendon O’Connor, Mike Fitzgerald, Greg Bateman and Jono Kitto have agreed new deals to stay at the club beyond this season.

Mauger, speaking at his press conference to preview Saturday’s game against Bristol Rugby at Welford Road, said: “It’s a real positive that those guys are committed to the club.

“They have all made big improvements here and I believe there is still plenty of growth in those players. Their best years are probably still ahead of them and I think they are all going to add to this group.

“That helps to drive the standard on the training field and compete for places which drives the competition across the board.”

Mauger added: “We’re excited to welcome George to the club after the summer.

“He’s a classy operator. He controls the teams well, he’s like an on-field coach out there, so we’re looking forward to bringing his rugby intellect and ability into the group.

“Freddie Burns has been fantastic, I’ve really enjoyed working with him. We’ll be looking to get the best out of him for the rest of the year.

“He is fully committed, he loves being part of this team and we want him to go out with a bang.”
