Club mascot Welford helped launch a major new charity race around the roads of Leicester later this year that will raise money for the Tigers Foundation.

The Leicester 10K takes place on Sunday, September 3. It will start and finish in Abbey Park and will take runners across the Grand Union Canal and into the city centre, past the Richard III visitor centre, and Leicester Cathedral. Runners will then twice cross the River Soar before ending with a final lap of Abbey Park.

The race is the latest addition to the successful 10K series, supported by the Asda Foundation and organised by Run For All, part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2m for charity by tackling a string of gruelling challenges despite being diagnosed with incurable cancer.

Tigers mascot Welford joined Leicester-born actress Terri Dwyer, star of Hollyoaks and Loose Women, to officially launch the even at Leicester Cathedral.

Tigers Foundation trustee Scott Clarke said: “Run For All approached us about getting involved and we were delighted to show our support. It’s great to have them bringing their popular running events to Leicester – already there are ten across the UK – and so it’s a great opportunity to get behind something that will be positive for the city and raise thousands of local charities.

“We’re really looking forward to driving this forward and I am sure our supporters will get behind this.”

Participants can run for fun or raise funds for a chosen charity, such as the Tigers Foundation.

Terri said: “It’s such exciting news that the new 10K is coming to Leicester. Jane Tomlinson was a very brave and inspirational lady who proved that anything is possible. I hope lots of people will be inspired by her to take on their own challenge – whether that’s to run, walk or jog.”
