Coach Shane Fox has won a county-wide competition to find grassroots rugby's unsung hero.

The competition was launched by The Nottingham Building Society and Leicester Tigers to celebrate and reward the hard work by people, like Shane, who play a huge part in the running of their local rugby club.

Shane is coach to the Vixens girls’ rugby squads in Coalville was was nominated by Emma Green, one of the club’s under-13 players.

Alongside the accolade, he won a rugby shirt and ball plus 20 tickets top take a group from his club to the Leicester Tigers’ last home game of the season, against Sale Sharks on April 29.

Shane has worked tirelessly to introduce rugby into local schools and set up the Young Rugby Ambassadors Group which was a springboard for The Vixens. Supported by his partner Sam Hagon, he also manages all three Vixens squads at under-13s, 15s and 18s.

“It is amazing to coach the girls, they are a delight to work with,” he said. “Receiving this award is a very humbling experience.”

Explaining her nomination, Emma said: “A couple of years ago Shane started a girls’ team called The Vixens for three age-groups. The first training session involved less than 10 girls and now there are around 60 across the three groups.

“He has done a lot to help and shown his enthusiasm and commitment to all three teams and the Young Rugby Ambassador programme.

“Shane supports us and pushes us to do our best and at the same time he keeps all the training sessions and games fun. That’s why I think he is a good coach.”
