Our execution has to be better says Murphy

Geordan Murphy says he was disappointed with a "lack of execution" from Leicester Tigers in the league defeat by Bath at Twickenham on Saturday.

Tigers raced into a 12-point lead with tries from Brendon O’Connor and Telusa Veainu, and did not concede their advantage until two Anthony Watson scores around the 70-minte mark as Bath edged to a 27-21 victory in front of a 61,000 crowd.

“I’m very disappointed,” assistant coach Murphy said. “We had a really good start, in the first 20-25 minutes we played the way we wanted to, but then I think we switched off a bit.

“We’re disappointed with our lack of execution. We got into their 22 seven times but only converted two of them into points and that kills you. If you take points from a few more of those visits then that changes the momentum of the game there. You convert a few more of those opportunities and we should go on and win the game.

“In the second half we probably lacked a bit of detail, we got on the wrong side of a few decisions but the boys are aware we can be better.

“In the last 15 or 20 minutes we forced it a bit and made uncharacteristic mistakes. That’s disappointing but it is also an opportunity for us to learn from that.”

Tigers remain ahead of Bath in fourth place in the Aviva Premiership table, but only on points difference as both sides have 52 points and 11 wins after 19 rounds.

“Everyone is hoping other teams can do them a favour, but it is still in our hands if we get the wins and hopefully it will be a case of getting top four again,” said Murphy. “I don’t remember it ever being this tight, but we have still got control of the situation.

“We’ve got Newcastle to come on Saturday. You know they will be physical and committed, and they’ve also added to their squad and they had a good win over Gloucester on Friday night.”
