Grassroots football club Guru Nanak Gurdwara (GNG) FC has joined a rugby development programme organised by the Leicester Tigers community development team.

The football club, which has junior, youth, adult and veteran teams, plays its matches across Leicestershire’s amateur leagues and is now taking part in a programme which uses the differing fitness aspects of the two sports.

The sessions revolve around specific strength and conditioning training and are open to each of the clubs men’s and youth teams. With 12 sessions lined up at its Riverside Football Ground and satellite centre at Soar Valley College, the club hopes that by introducing its teams to rugby training methods, its players can enhance their skills and fitness.

David McDonald, education manager at Leicester Tigers, said: “Football and rugby both have similarities with regard to the fitness element of training.

“What we are hoping to do is to introduce GNG teams and coaches to a different way of training that focuses specifically on the strength and conditioning of players, with a goal to better prepare them for the physicality of competitive football.

“We’ve had a great response from the players already and we can’t wait to see the results.”

Bobby Upple, director of partnerships at GNG FC, added: “We’re fortunate to have strong roots in Leicester’s Sikh community, having started as a club back in 1969, and we are delighted to have the expertise of Leicester Tigers coaches on board to bring a different dimension to strength and fitness training.

“By introducing rugby to our teams and communities, we hope to see many more people get involved not just with GNG FC but with rugby and other sports across Leicestershire.”

This is the first of a number of rugby programmes Tigers are planning to support in line with the RFU and Premiership Rugby. Watch this space over the summer for news of more programmes in the pipeline.
