Adam Thompstone, Ellis Genge and Telusa Veainu picked up the prizes at the Leicester Tigers Players' Awards Night at Welford Road on Tuesday.

The squad and team management joined sponsors for the evening to recognise their top performers of the season.

Thompstone was named Players’ Player of the Year, with Genge collecting the Players’ Young Player of the Year after topping the votes among team-mates.

Veainu picked up the prize for Try of the Season, as voted for by the player sponsors, for a second successive season after his solo run in the home game against Worcester Warriors was chosen as the best of the campaign.

“I’d like to thank all the boys who voted for me, it is a special award to win,” said Players’ Player winner Thompstone.

“It was incredible just to be part of the top three nominations alongside Freddie [Burns] and Luke [Hamilton] and to win it is a real honour.“

Head coach Matt O’Connor presented the award and said: “The award is well deserved, Thommo has probably been our stand-out player across the season. We started tracking him back in 2008 so to see him get this award is testament to what he has put into his game over nearly a decade now.”

Petar Cvetkovic, of Thompstone’s player sponsor DX, received a special prize of a made-to-measure suit from Savile Row tailors Chester Barrie as part of the winner’s achievement.

Genge has enjoyed an impressive season and his Young Player award capped a 10-day period which has seen him score two tries in a bonus-point win over Newcastle Falcons, receive a call-up to the England squad for the summer tour to Argentina and agree new contract terms with the club.

“The club has been very good for me, “ Genge said. “Trying to get better and to learn was part of the reason I joined the club and working with guys like Dan Cole and Marcos Ayerza has been part of that.”

Sponsors chose Veainu’s score against Worcester – starting with his catch of a clearance kick near halfway and featuring a mazy run to the tryline – as their favourite of the season and the full-back received his prize from Janette Cooper-Hudson from Next.

Tigers chief executive Simon Cohen said: “This has been a challenging season and it speaks volumes for the resilience of the club that we have won one trophy and are still in the running for a place in the semi-finals in the Aviva Premiership.

“We are very grateful for our supporters, sponsors, player sponsors and 1880 guests because they are all part of the club and very important to what we do going forward.  Thank you all for that support.”

The Supporters’ Players Awards Night is at Welford Road next Tuesday (May 2). Voting in four categories –Player of the Year, Young Player, Best Newcomer and Outstanding Service – is open now, but only until Friday afternoon this week.
