A hard-working openside flanker, Ben Herring joined Leicester Tigers to gain his first experience of northern-hemisphere rugby after previously keeping the company of All Blacks internationals Jerry Collins, Chris Maso and Rodney So’oialo in a Wellington Hurricanes side led by national skipper Tana Umaga. Ben earned 31 provincial caps and faced the British & Irish Lions as a Wellington player in June 2005 before moving to Leicester.
His previous clubs include New Zealand sides Alhambra, Petone, Southland, Wellington and the Otago Highlanders, as well as the Hurricanes, while he has also received international recognition with New Zealand U-21 and the Junior All Blacks
Ben gained some game-time with Tigers in the Guinness A League during 2006/07 and ended his debut senior campaign in England by starting two cup finals and picking up the supporters’ 2007/08 Newcomer of the Year award. The season saw him score four first-team tries, all on home soil at Welford Road, in his first start against Worcester Warriors and then against Leinster, Bristol and Harlequins.
