PPL PRS and TheMusicLicence was established in 2017 and became fully operational in early 2018. The business is a joint venture between its parent companies; PPL and PRS for Music, the UK’s two music rights organisations. The companies created this joint venture to streamline their service and make it easier for their customers to obtain a music licence to play music in public.
Under the Copyright Designs & Patents Act 1988, permission is needed from the relevant copyright holders in order to play music in public. Instead of contacting each rights holder individually, TheMusicLicence grants customers the permission required to use music within their business, under just one licence.
TheMusicLicence enables businesses to be able to play recorded music via any device, including the radio; showing TV broadcasts, other audio-visual content containing music; or putting on live performances of music.
By having TheMusicLicence, it enables you to legally use virtually all commercially available music, this includes millions of songs and recordings, including the most popular and well-loved music not just from the UK but also from around the world, from global superstars through to emerging artists who are new to your playlist.
Playing music within your business can have multiple benefits – from assisting with customer engagement and brand identity through to helping to improve your staff productivity, wellbeing and morale.
One of the other benefits of obtaining TheMusicLicence is the support it provides for the performers, writers and producers of the music being played, ensuring that they receive a fair reward for their work and talent while also helping to enhance businesses public environments.
Aside from the business costs, all of the licence fees collected are distributed back to PPL and PRS for Music to process, allocate and distribute as royalties to the music creators they represent. This helps to ensure those who create the music we all love are fairly paid for their work.
