Record response at charity recruitment drive

Record numbers of people responded to pleas to help save teenager Bethany Mickelburgh's life at a Welford Road recruitment event.

A total of 1,973 people registered with charity Anthony Nolan to become a potential bone marrow donor for Bethany Mickelburgh. Bethany, 14, of Leicester, needs a transplant after being diagnosed with leukaemia for the third time.

Anthony Nolan, a UK charity that focuses on leukaemia and Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, said it was the most sign-ups they have ever had at a single event.

“This is testament not only to Leicester’s community spirit but also the Mickelburgh family, who have worked tirelessly to promote the event,” the charity said.

“Well done and thank you to everyone involved and everyone who signed up.”
