A County Cup fixture for Oadby Wyggestonian RFC signalled the start of Harry Sturmey’s journey to the Leicester Tigers academy.
“I’d been at Wyggs from about six years old and was first asked to go to a trial after a County Cup game,” says Harry of his journey to join his hometown club.
“I got into the system from there with the DPP at Stoneygate and then into the academy.
“My family are passionate about rugby and have always been big supporters of the Tigers.”
Educated at Loughborough Grammar School and Denstone College, Harry played cricket alongside his rugby and started at centre before moving to the wing.
Getting to know you
Who was your favourite rugby player growing up?
Anthony Allen, I watched him quite a lot. Having him as a coach at Tigers was great, I learned a lot. Now we’ve got Matt Smith who I also watched as a player.
If you could play alongside any rugby player in the world, who would it be?
Jonah Lomu, with all his power, it would be great.
What do you like most about rugby compared with other sports?
I like the competitiveness but also all the good mates you make on and off the pitch, there’s a good vibe about it.
