As part of the Norfolk contingent joining the Leicester Tigers academy in 2017, back-rower Ollie Ashworth followed a well-trodden path to Welford Road.

Born in Norwich, Ollie played at Wymondham RFC and says Tigers’ Norfolk DPP base and coaching has had a big influence on his progress.

“I started at Wymondham in the under-6s,” he says. “I turned up in my football kit on the first day – classic – but I really enjoyed it right from the start.

“I played in the forwards, then at inside centre for a bit and then settled in the back row.

“Tim Malone was in charge of our DPP and he was also my coach at school, so I’ve had a lot of guidance from him. He is always willing to take the time to talk with us as individuals and help your development as a player - and he’s been very helpful at school too.”

Ollie was in the stands as Tigers won the Under-18s Academies League title in 2017/18, beating Gloucester in the Final at Allianz Park.

“It was great for the team to have such a successful season,” he says. “And they scored some good tries in the Final too.”
