Experience in the front row, back row and even the centres has prepared Sam Westmacott for the rough-and-tumble of the Under-18s Academy League.
“I used to be quite a chunky boy when I was younger,” he laughs. “I played at prop or hooker, then I trimmed down a little bit to play in the back row or at centre, and now I’m back at hooker again, and really learning my stuff.”
Born in London but raised in Dubai until the age of 15, Sam picked up a love of rugby from father Steven, who has played for the British Army side.
After moving back to the UK, Sam joined Uppingham School in Rutland, where director of rugby Nick de Luca put the young front rower in touch with the Tigers Academy for a trial ahead of the 2019/20 season.

I’d love to read minds.
Who’s the most famous person you’ve taken a selfie with?
Probably the USA 7s team; Carlin Isles, Perry Baker … that was pretty cool.
