Top man Thomas hails Tigers fightback

Thomas Waldrom praised the whole Leicester Tigers team for bouncing back from a half-time deficit to beat Clermont Auvergne at Welford Road on Saturday.

The Tigers No8 collected his second Heineken Man of the Match award of the season after also being named top man in the home win over Ulster.

The 23-19 victory kept Tigers in contention for a place in the quarter-finals from a tight Pool 4 with two fixtures remaining.

Waldrom played a central part, alongside back-row colleagues Tom Croft and Julian Salvi, in another physical and tense contest with Clermont.

“You know Clermont’s back row are very good players, they have a lot of international players all over the pitch and you want to try to see if your game matches up,” said Waldrom.

“We made a few mistakes just before half-time but that can happen in rugby and then you just have to dig deep and get over them.”

Tigers trailed 6-0 in the opening 15 minutes and then 16-7 at half-time after a 39th-minute try from All Blacks wing Sitiveni Sivivatu. But the home side fought back in the second half to grab four valuable points.

“At half-time everybody was fine,” said Waldrom. “We did some good things but we just needed to keep control, get the ball in front of our forwards and play in the right areas of the pitch. In the second half you rely on ball possession and get the pressure back on them.

“Both sets of supporters are very passionate and they add so much when you are the home team so it was nice to get the win for them too.”

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said he was “delighted” to secure a third win in four games in the Heineken Cup so far this season, especially after trailing at half-time.

“We managed the game pretty well but then we coughed-up ball and they punished us with the try just before half-time,” he said.

“We were disappointed by that because we were looking at going in just two points down playing into a stiff breeze and the rain. But then they punished us for being a bit sloppy and we were suddenly nine points down.

“But then we got back into it and ground out the win.

“It was important we got the first points of the second half. Fair play to Floody, we got that.

“There were some disappointments in that but they are a quality side, they defend very well and it was hard to get quality ball. But we kept our bottle and that kept us in the tournament.”

Tigers resume European action with a Round 5 trip to face Ulster in Belfast, then host Italian side Aironi on the weekend of January 20/21/22.
