Saxons call is another lesson for Slater

Ed Slater says the Leicester Tigers environment has prepared him for his England Saxons call-up.

Slater was called into the group on Monday ahead of their game against Ireland Wolfhounds at Exeter’s Sandy Park this Saturday.

The Saxons had their first training session on Tuesday morning and Slater says he is getting used to the new calls and phases.

“Life at Leicester prepares you for these kind of things,” says the 23-year-old lock. “It’s a pretty hard environment and there are a lot of quality players about.

“We had our first session on Tuesday morning and it is just a case of getting used to the various calls and phases.

“It’s a learning process. Ireland will be a really tough test and we are expecting a physical battle from them.”

Richard Cockerill says Slater’s call-up is reward for his hard work and attitude with Tigers.

“I’m delighted for Ed because he has worked so hard to establish himself in our squad during the last two seasons at the club,” says Tigers director of rugby Cockerill.

“When we first brought him in, there were not a lot of people who knew much about him, but he has kept his head down and improved all parts of his game.

“He is in a very competitive environment here with guys like Louis Deacon, Geoff Parling, George Skivington, Graham Kitchener and Steve Mafi playing in his position and working alongside them is obviously playing its part in his development.

“I think this England Saxons call-up is a reward for his hard work and his attitude to his game and we look forward to seeing his continued progress.”
