University of Leicester recorded a Varsity double against De Montfort University at Welford Road on Wednesday evening.After running in eight tries to win the women’s match 45-3, Leicester’s men completed the evening with a 22-8 triumph in front of a large and noisy crowd at the home of the Leicester Tigers.
Two tries in a four-minute spell during the first half swung the men’s game decisively in the University of Leicester’s favour, taking the score from 3-3 to 17-3 after tries from Jack Arundell and Josh Finch. A second from Arundell stretched the lead to 22-3 at half-time.
The only try of the second half came from DMU wing Michael Agyei, but it was their neighbours who celebrated as they lifted the Leicester Tigers Foundation Varsity Shield and stretched their lead in the annual head-to-head contest to 8-4.
The University of Leicester made it 12 in a row in the women’s fixture, racing into a 17-point lead in the opening quarter of an hour during the first fixture of the evening. They claimed four tries in each half with Emily Varnals, Anna Stephenson and Jessica Wells each claiming two.
