Welford Road welcomes record support

The 2016/17 season is a record-breaker at the home of the Leicester Tigers.

More than 374,000 supporters bought tickets for Tigers home fixtures at Welford Road over 16 games in league and cups during 2016/17, the highest figure in the club’s 137-year history.

This also resulted in record ticket revenues from 16 regular season games, which all goes back into the club and financing the playing squad up to the salary cap.

Also, after a crowd of almost 24,000 shared in the last home game of the season last Saturday, the average attendance for 11 Aviva Premiership fixtures at Welford Road was 22,899 – an increase of five per cent on the previous season.

Other highlights in the campaign include Welford Road’s biggest-ever European Cup attendance with a crowd of more than 24,000 for the match against Munster in December – won with a last-minute penalty from Owen Williams – and the biggest attendance for a pool-stage fixture in the history of the Anglo-Welsh Cup when Tigers hosted a 25,849 sell-out crowd for the derby game against Northampton Saints in January.

Tigers chief executive Simon Cohen said: “The strength of support for the Tigers is known throughout rugby and the fanbase continues to grow with new supporters enjoying matchdays with us every season.

“We are extremely grateful to our supporters because they play such a central part in everything we do as a club.

“The commercial income that the club generates, including from sales of season tickets and match tickets, is essential in allowing us to continue to support the team on the pitch and in financing the squad up to the salary cap, especially where increases in those levels have not been matched by central revenues.

“The record ticket sales and revenues for this season speak volumes for the strength of support and the loyalty and commitment of the Tigers fans.”

At Leicester Tigers every match is a big match.
