1999 Season History
CAPTAIN: MARTIN JOHNSON
First Captained - v Orrell on January 14 1995, 29-19 win
World Cup years provide their challenges, though Tigers not only went into the 1999 tournament as English champions but also emerged from it with back-to-back titles.
Welford Road had its own World Cup celebrations as it hosted Tonga’s narrow win over Italy, secured with a last-minute drop goal and watched by a crowd of more than 10,000, and the Princess Royal was another notable visitor as the Tigers headed towards a second successive league title with Ben Kay and Peter Short among new arrivals.
The following season saw the beginning of the Samoan connection with the signing of Fereti Tuilagi from rugby league. Little did we know, as Tigers headed towards a third league title and a first European crown, how it would be just the start of his family’s impact in the East Midlands.
