Development XV beaten in Prem Shield

Leicester Tigers Development XV were beaten 62-19 by Wasps in the Premiership Shield at Broadstreet on Saturday afternoon.

Wasps, who included eight senior players in their matchday squad, ran in 10 tries, including eight in the first half as they led 48-0 at the break.

A Tigers team led by lock Sam Lewis contained six guest players in the backline and conceded the opening score after just five minutes when Jacob Umaga ran in unopposed on the left before adding the conversion for a seven-point lead.

The speedy Callum Sirker scored the first of his four tries on the day just moments later and Wasps made it 19-0 when opposite wing Taju Attu got on the end of a sweeping attack on the right.

The bonus-point score came on 20 minutes when Tigers lost possession near halfway and Sirker won the race to the ball out wide and he completed his hat-trick with a free run on the left.

Scrum-half Will Porter added a long-distance try as the points continued to stack up and Tigers academy graduate Umaga added a cheeky score from a close-range penalty as he shaped to chip to touch but tapped to himself and reached over to score.

Wasps hooker Antonio Harris added the eighth try of the half as he bounced off three defenders to run in next to the posts and Umaga added the conversion for a 48-point lead at the break.

Former Tigers tighthead Keiran Brookes returned from injury to join the action at the start of the second half for Wasps, but Tigers claimed the opening points as they built on some good work from the kick-off to score through Fred Tuilagi, dotting down at the left-hand post after Owen Hills had been stopped just short. Tom Hardwick added the conversion.

Tigers continued to push forward, with wing James Spencer catching the restart and racing upfield, only to see Umaga sweep up his chipped kick virtually on the tryline, then strong work at the breakdown from centre Elliott Creed won a penalty and another chance to play up to opposition territory.

After Wasps centre Ross Neal burst through the backline to score, Sirker ran in his fourth try – and sixth in two outings – after being released down the touchline by full-back Cameron Anderson and the lead reached 62-7.

But Tigers still had time to add two more tries of their own, with Loughborough University centre Tim Bitirim cutting through a gap in midfield to break from halfway and force his way over despite being tackled close to the line. Then fly-half Hardwick and Bitirim took play up to the line again and, when Tigers went wide with penalty advantage, Charlie Hudson managed to slap the ball back for Tino Mapapalangi to dive over in the final action the afternoon.

Team news | Four changes for Shield match at Wasps

Tigers development head coach Ant Allen makes four changes to the side that beat Sale Jets on Monday night for the Premiership Rugby Shield match against Wasps on Saturday (March 30) at Broadstreet RFC.

Loosehead prop Owen Hills and international hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau come into the front row to join tighthead David Feao, who scored one of Tigers’ six tries at Heywood Road earlier in the week.

Sam Lewis captains the side alongside Cam Jordan in an unchanged second row, while Fred Tuilagi swaps the No8 shirt for Valentino Mapapalangi’s No6, with the Tongan international shifting to the back of the scrum. Tigers Academy graduate Henri Lavin completes the back row.

Tom Hardwick resumes at fly-half to link up with Loughborough Students scrum-half Will Findlay and a backline made up of five guest players from both Loughborough University and Doncaster Knights.

Aaron Tait keeps his slot on the left wing, while centres Tim Bitirim and Elliott Creed also pick up from where they left off on Monday. James Spencer, who started at full-back against the Jets, switches to the right wing while Loughborough team-mate Josh Lewis comes in at 15.

In the replacements, Ross McMillan, Campese Ma’afu and Loughborough tighthead Osman Dimen will offer front row support, while Tommy Reffell makes his return from an injury picked up on Wales U20 duty. Tigers Academy graduates Taylor Gough and Jonny Law are joined by Hartpury’s Joe Margetts at 20, 21 and 22. Charlie Hudson, who also dotted down at Heywood Road on Monday, will offer back three cover.

Speaking ahead of the match, Tigers development head coach Ant Allen said: “The 23 that travelled up to Sale put in a hell of a shift on Monday night, but now it’s about backing that performance up against Wasps.

“We’ve got a good mix of experience and emerging talent, and so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Match tickets are available on the gate at Broadstreet RFC at £5 for adults (including parking) and FREE for under-16s.

Supporters unable to make the trip can follow the action with updates provided LIVE on Twitter throughout the game.
