Match report: Battling Tigers edged out at Wasps

Leicester Tigers took two points from a 41-35 defeat at Wasps in Round 3 of the Gallagher Premiership campaign on Sunday despite playing half of the game a man short.

Two early tries gave the hosts a 14-point advantage before Jonny May dotted down his third try of the season for Tigers.

Nathan Hughes added a third for Wasps but George Ford’s place-kicking kept Tigers in the hunt before Telusa Veainu scored his first try of the season to cut the deficit to 22-18.

Tigers, though, then lost lock Will Spencer to a red card for a high hit on Tommy Taylor and Wasps ended the half 25-18 in front.

A superb start to the second period from the 14-man Tigers gave them the lead with Ford kicking a penalty and then converting a try from Sione Kalamafoni, and the scores kept coming, with De Jongh and May each adding their second of the day to claim bonus points for their respective sides and the game was tied at 35-35 with 13 minutes remaining. Lima Sopoaga added two late kicks to give Wasps the victory.

The teams went into the game with one win and one defeat – both beaten by Exeter Chiefs – in the opening weeks of the campaign, and with Tigers chasing a first win on Wasps soil since their first visit to Coventry in May 2015.

In team news announced on Friday, Guy Thompson replaced the injured Brendon O’Connor in the Tigers back row, making his first start for the club against his former team-mates, while there were landmark appearances for Dan Cole (200 games) and Manu Tuilagi (100 starts). With England Under-20s quartet Ben White, Tom Hardwick, Jordan Olowofela and Joe Heyes among the replacements, Geordan Murphy included 12 academy graduates in the 23 for his first away game in charge as interim head coach.

Tigers included four survivors of their win in Coventry three years ago – Adam Thompstone, Ben Youngs, Tom Youngs and Dan Cole – while there were eight in the Wasps squad including England international duo Joe Launchbury and Elliot Daly.

Wasps gave summer signing Sopoaga a first start at fly-half but were without England back-rower Brad Shields who suffered a fractured cheekbone against the Chiefs last week.

Cole and Tuilagi ran out at the head of the Tigers team, wearing the club’s alternate white and purple kit, and it was Wasps who got the game under way. They enjoyed some good early possession too, with Veainu twice having to make tackles on their ball-carriers, before Tigers broke out and threatened a the other end with Tuilagi, Thompson and Spencer carrying dangerously.

Wasps were kept close to their line from a lineout but Tigers spilled ball just short of the tryline as the forwards put the pressure on their rivals.

Eight minutes had elapsed before Wasps returned to halfway, but a misplaced pass in the Tigers backline almost provided a chance until Tuilagi took Christian Wade down and then the hosts knocked-on.

It was Wasps, though, who made the breakthrough, though there was an element of good fortune in the score for centre Juan de Jongh.

When Tigers kicked clear, Elliot Daly looked to return it with interest, only for his shallow kick to catch Veainu full in the face near halfway. From the bounce, Wasps were away upfield and some quick hands put Josh Bassett and then Dan Robson away before the offload for De Jongh to dive in. Sopoaga made it a seven-point score with the conversion.

Bassett almost latched on to a long pass from Ben Youngs after the restart, only to knock-on as he reached for ball in front of Adam Thompstone.

A second score for the hosts followed on 15 minutes when brisk work on the right almost put Wade in, but they recycled infield and Daly’s chip to the left put Bassett in to score. This time Sopoaga added the kick from the left touchline as the lead reached 14 points.

Tigers, though, hit back immediately, building possession up front before Ford took ball up to the line and put a perfect kick in behind for May to score in the right-hand corner. The conversion flew just wide.

The restart took play back into the Tigers 22 as Gareth Owen knocked-on and, after Ben Youngs had halted the progress of N08 Nathan Hughes from the base of the scrum, Tigers were penalised and then to withstand a period of pressure on the tryline before Hughes finally forced his way over. Sopoaga missed the conversion from the right of the posts as Wasps led 19-5 with 25 minutes played.

Ford chipped into the deficit with a penalty from 25 metres on 27 minutes and he had a second opportunity three minutes when Michael Le Bourgeois was whistled at the tackle zone just beyond his own 10-metre line. Ford struck it well and the ball was still rising as it sailed through the posts to make the score 19-11.

The end-to-end action continued as Tigers were penalised in their own 22 and referee Ian Tempest reviewed a tackle from Dan Cole on Robson as he took the tap but decided no further sanction was necessary as play came back for a kick at the posts from 23 metres. Sopoaga chipped it over to take the lead out to 11 points.

Veainu poached his first try of the season, getting on the end of some neat work in attack from Ford, after carries from Williams and Tom Youngs, and diving in under the posts. The conversion brought it back to 22-18 with 100 seconds left on the 40 minutes.

Tigers cleared their lines and forced a knock-on near halfway, only for the TMO to draw attention to a Will Spencer tackle on Tommy Taylor. His decision was contact had been shoulder to head and issued a red card with 40 seconds remaining on the clock.

Full-back Daly called for the kicking tee a metre inside his own half and judged the penalty well as he made it 25-18 at the break.

The 14 men of the Tigers got the second period under way with no further changes to the line-ups, and Tigers had an early opportunity when, despite losing lineout ball, they were awarded a penalty on the Wasps 22 when Wade was whistled at the breakdown. Ford struck it well from the tee to take Tigers to within four points of their rivals.

Another penalty followed when Thompstone claimed a Youngs kick on the right wing, only to be brought down with an arm around the neck. Ford pushed play down the right and referee Tempest blew again when Wasps collapsed a promising maul.

The Tigers fly-half thumped the second penalty into the right-hand corner with the travelling support in full voice. Another whistle followed at the lineout, Hughes playing his rival in the air.

Again Ford kicked into the corner, again Mike Williams secured ball, again Tigers set up a maul. The whistle blew once more and Hughes was sin-binned.

With the sides level at 14 men each, a superb charge for the line by Kalamafoni put Tigers in front for the first time, despite the attentions of several tacklers. Ford made it 25-28 with the extras.

Wasps lost prop Ben Harris to injury in the scoring phase and then fell foul of the referee at the restart as Tigers claimed ball. Instead of being in their own 22, Ford kicked up the touchline, but Launchbury stole the lineout.

The lead lasted five minutes before De Jongh claimed a solo score, cutting in from the left with the Tigers defence outnumbered 35 metres out and then finding a line to the posts for the bonus-point score. The conversion from Sopoaga made it 32-28.

A minute later, Ford made good use of front-foot ball and popped a pass to May in support as he added his second try of the day to claim a bonus point too. Ford quickly added the kick and Tigers were ahead 35-32.

Jordan Olowfoela replaced Thompstone as play got under way again, with Hughes back from his yellow card in the Wasps back row, but referee Tempest’s unpopularity with the home crowd grew when he brought play back for a Tigers scrum near halfway. With a man short up front, Olowofela packed down at flanker and Tigers quickly got the ball into play, gaining another penalty for offside just inside their rivals’ half of the field.

Ford, with three penalties and three conversions up to that point, struck the right-hand post with the kick and the score remained 35-32 in his side’s favour.

Wasps overloaded their left as they threatened a break, but the Tigers defence kept them out until replacement David Feao was penalised at the tackle area 35 metres out and Sopoaga levelled the scores with the kick to set up an intriguing final 13 period of the game.

A huge moment in the context of the game followed when Sopoaga eyed a gap close in and dived over the line, only for Ben Youngs and Thompson to combined in a hit and forced the ball loose over the tryline.

Wasps were beginning to use their numerical advantage as they played through the phases and stretched the defence across the pitch. A penalty award 35 metres out gave Sopoaga another shot at goal and his kick made it 38-35.

Joe Heyes replaced Cole for his first taste of Premiership rugby as the game restarted, with fellow academy graduates Jimmy Stevens and Ben White also entering the action.

There was no let-up in the action, though a scrum penalty in Wasps favour on their own 10-metre line gave them some breathing space as Sopoaga kicked down the right with a little over two minutes remaining.

They retained ball in hand in Tigers territory and gained reward with a penalty which Sopoaga knocked over for a six-point lead, though referee Tempest did warn the hosts the game would still restart with a matter of seconds left. Launchbury made sure as he caught the restart kick and Robson kicked out to seal the victory.

Two match points

Tigers will take two points back with them up the M69 - a try-bonus and a losing bonus - after a breathless 80 minutes.

It's all over!

Wasps collect the restart and run down the clock before Robson kicks to touch to end the game. 14-man Tigers go down to a brave, battling 41-35 defeat,

Wasps lead by six

Wasps search for the try that will guarantee their win. Thompson wins the turnover under his posts. But he is pinged by referee Tempest and Wasps point to the posts. Sopoaga kicks them into a 41-35 lead.

Debut appearance

Joe Heyes is on for his Tigers debut. He replaces Dan Cole. Jimmy Stevens is on for Tom Youngs. And Ben White is on for Ben Youngs.

Wasps lead

Sopoaga looks to have spilled the ball, but the referee is happy he regathered possession before it hit the floor. Instead, Denton is pinged for a high tackle on the fly-half, who lands the penalty to put Wasps 38-35 ahead.

70

What a tackle!

What a tackle by Ben Youngs and Guy Thompson. They somehow get back to tackle Sopoaga as he dives for the line and dislodge the ball. Don't know how they did it, but they did!

Hardwick on

Tom Hardwick is on in the Tigers midfield. The academy graduate replaces Owen, who has had a cracking game on his first appearance of the season.

All square

Sopoaga lands an easy penalty to level the scores at 35-35. It's breathless stuff.

What a shift from Williams

Mike Williams comes off after an excellent afternoon's work. He is replaced in the second row by Harry Wells.

64

Tenacious Tigers

Tuilagi rips the ball from Daly and Bassett picks it up in front to give away an offside penalty. Keep it up boys!

Hooker replacement

Taylor's afternoon is over. He is replaced by Tom Cruse.

63

Yet another penalty

Wasps infringe again. They're offside as Tigers recycle the ball quickly. Ford goes for goal 45m out. It's a clean strike but the ball comes back off the right-hand post. Robson kicks to halfway.

Wing replacement

Jordan Olowofela is on for the final quarter. He replaces Thompstone. Meanwhile, Wasps are back up to 15 with Hughes back on from the sin bin.

Conversion added

Ford gets a hurry on with the conversion before his try-scoring pass can be reviewed. Tigers lead 35-32. What a game!

Try time as Tigers hit back!

Tigers have their bonus-point try. Ford with the inside pass puts May away for his second try of the game. There's a hint of forward in the pass, but referee Tempest has awarded it.

Tigers replacement

David Feao is on for Greg Bateman in the front row. De Jongh, meanwhile, is off for a HIA.

Conversion added

Sopoaga adds a simple conversion to move Wasps into a 32-28 lead.

Wasps lead again

Juan de Jongh slaloms his way to the line for Wasps' bonus-point fourth try. The centre stepped off his left to wrong-foot Veainu and then agains past Owen before scoring under the posts.

51

Another penalty against Wasps

Kieran Brookes, the ex-Tigers prop, is pinged for kicking the ball at a ruck. Another penalty against the hosts allows Tigers to kick up to halfway.

Tigers lead by three

Ford adds the extras and Tigers have scored 10 unanswered points at the start of this half to lead 28-25.

Trrryyyy!!!

Tigers get the nudge on the maul again. Sione Kalamafoni breaks free, twists and turns in the contact and has the awareness to dot down. Tigers lead for the first time in the game.

Yellow to Wasps

Wasps cynically pull down the maul as Tigers drive to the line. It's Hughes, a fifth penalty of the half against the hosts. And he will have a 10-minute breather as he sees yellow.

45

Ford goes to the corner

The penalty is kicked to within 5m as the Leicester fans in the stadium raise the noise. Tigers now have another penalty advantage. That's four in the red zone in the first five minutes of this half.

44

Tigers back in the Wasps 22

Ford kicks the penalty into the Wasps 22. Williams claims the lineout and Tigers get the drive on, which is dragged down. Another penalty to Leicester at the start of this second period.

43

Now Bassett goes high

Adam Thompstone jumps high about Bassett to claim the ball. Bassett responds with a seatbelt tackle, that gives Leicester the penalty. But no further sanction against the Wasps man.

Ford lands his kick

Ford takes his tally in the game to 11 with a perfectly struck penalty. Tigers trail 25-21.

41

Positive start

While the debate continues to rage about Spencer's red card, Tigers are getting on with things and win an early penalty. Ford points to the posts.

Tigers up against it

Tigers have it all to do in the second-half. They trail Wasps 25-18 and are down to 14 men after Spencer saw red at the end of the second half for a high tackle on Robson.

40

The teams are back out

Ford will get the second half going, with 14-man Tigers attacking from right to left.

40

Tigers up against it

Tigers have it all to do in the second-half. They trail Wasps 25-18 and are down to 14 men after Spencer saw red at the end of the second half for a high tackle on Robson.

Wasps punish Tigers further

Daly, from inside his own half, swings his left boot and give Wasps a 25-18 lead at the break.

It's a red card!

Spencer is sent off for his tackle on Taylor. Referee Tempest deemed the tackle was high and to the head and shows the Leicester lock a red card.

39

Huge tackle

Spencer puts in a huge shot on Tommy Taylor. It forces the Wasps man to spill possession. But the referee is going to check it with his TMO.

Seven-point score

Ford, fresh from creating the try, adds the conversion from bang in front and Tigers trail 22-18 with half-time approaching.

Try time!

Ford is the architect of Tigers' second try. The fly-half finds a line through the Wasps defence and unselfishly feeds Veainu on his inside shoulder for a run to the line.

34

Knock-on

... Tigers move it from the maul but Denton knocks on and Daly clears. Tigers have another lineout, this time on halfway.

34

What a kick

Ford finds touch inside the Wasps 22 from inside his own half as Hughes is pinged at a ruck. Tigers have the ball from the lineout ...

Wasps extend their lead

After all that, Sopoaga kicks a simple penalty to put Wasps into a 22-11 lead.

32

Nothing doing

Referee Tempest rules that Cole's tackle was not late and takes no action. But play comes back for the original penalty.

32

TMO time again

Wasps take a quick penalty and go over, but referee Tempest has pulled play back. Meanwhile, Robson is on the receiving end of a big tackle by Cole, which is now the subject of a review by the TMO.

Ford chips away

Ford lands the penalty from 44m out to chip away at the Wasps lead. Tigers now trail 19-11.

30

Ford to the fore

Ford stays strong in the tackle on Hughes. And when Michael Le Bourgeois joins to clear out he is pinged for going high. Ford will go for goal again ...

Tigers penalty

Wasps are pinged for offside in front of Sopoaga's clearance. Ford points to the posts and cuts the Wasps lead to 19-8.

24

Conversion missed

Sopoaga has missed the conversion, as Wasps lead Tigers 19-5.

Wasps have a third

Tigers knock-on the restart and are eventually punished as Wasps make the most of the scrum position. They hammer away at the Leicester line before Nathan Hughes forces his way over from close range.

20

Into the second quarter

The clock ticks past 20 minutes as Ford strikes his conversion, but it goes across the posts.

19

May on the Mark

It is Jonny May's third try in three games this Gallagher Premiership season and his 15th for Tigers in 23 appearances.

Tigers bite back

Tigers show plenty of patience to work the Wasps defence. Eventually Ford spots the gap in behind the hosts and angles the perfect kick for Jonny May to score.

Touchline conversion

Sopoaga lands the conversion from the left-hand touchline and Tigers trail Wasps 14-0.

It's a try

The TMO David Grashoff is happy that Bassett was onside when Daly launched his kick and the try is awarded.

15

Have Wasps scored again?

Referee Ian Tempest is going to his TMO as Wasps claim a second try through Bassett. The winger looked to have collected Daly's cross-kick and dotted down okay but was he in front of the kicker?

Conversion added

Sopoaga kicks an easy conversion, and Wasps lead 7-0.

Wasps lead

Telusa Veainu takes a clearing kick to the face from close range and goes to ground. Meanwhile, Wasps have the ball through Josh Bassett and counterattack. Dan Robson continues the attack and gets the offload away for Juan de Jongh to score under the posts.

8

Handling errors

Tuilagi is forced to retreat towards his own line to collect George Ford's pass, but spills the ball to Wade. Tuilagi does well to make the tackle before Nizaam Carr spills the ball to give Tigers the scrum put-in.

6

Lineout success

Tigers steal the ball at a Wasps defensive lineout and Gareth Owen breaks away but loses possession with the line in sight.

5

Bright start

Tigers threaten an early try, with Tuilagi at the fore. He was stopped 5m short, just as the Wasps defence looked to have opened up. Will Spencer followed up before Guy Thompson, against his old club, was held out.

3

Solid defensive set

Tigers soak up the early Wasps pressure and eventually win back possession through a knock-on. Now they're on the attack through Tuilagi's run down the left ...

0

We're off

Lima Sopoaga gets the game going, and Mike Williams makes a brilliant take.

Big-match preview: Tigers at Wasps

Leicester Tigers and Wasps meet in the Gallagher Premiership on Sunday with identical records in the fledgling league table so far this season.

The old rivals meet with five points from one win and one defeat each in their opening fixtures – coincidentally both being beaten by Exeter Chiefs – including one try bonus point so far.

Wasps were beaten by Exeter in Round 2, their first home defeat in Premiership action since January, while Tigers lost to the Chiefs at Sandy Park and then bounced back with a win over Newcastle Falcons last weekend.

Tigers have not won on Wasps soil since their first visit to Coventry in May 2015 and were beaten home and away by their nearest neighbours last season.

In team news announced on Friday, Guy Thompson makes a first start for Tigers against his former club and there are landmark appearances for Dan Cole (200 games) and Manu Tuilagi (100 starts). Wasps include summer signing Lima Sopoaga at fly-half and hand a debut to centre Michael Le Bourgeois. International back-rower Brad Shields misses out after suffering a fractured cheekbone in the game against the Chiefs last week.

Tigers include four survivors from the win in Coventry in 2015 – Adam Thompstone, Ben Youngs, Tom Youngs and Dan Cole – and there are eight in the Wasps squad including England international duo Joe Launchbury and Elliot Daly. Re-live the full details from that game by clicking here.

Referee on Sunday is Ian Tempest, who is approaching 50 Premiership fixtures in charge.

Tigers will wear the club’s white and purple alternate kit.

Kick-off is at 3.00pm and there is live coverage on BT Sport. Match tickets are still available.

If you are not attending the game or are unable to watch on TV, you can keep up to date with all of the action using the Tigers Matchday Live service on the club website, mobile website and official app. Or follow the club’s social media pages on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Team news: Tigers away to Wasps

International duo Dan Cole and Manu Tuilagi hit Leicester Tigers landmarks in Sunday’s Gallagher Premiership Round 3 fixture against Wasps.

Tighthead prop Cole makes his 200th appearance for the club and Tuilagi is in line for his 100th starting appearance in Tigers colours.

Cole, with 82 Test caps for England to his name as well as two tours with the British & Irish Lions, made his Tigers debut against Bath in October 2007.

Tuilagi, winner of the Citizen Try of the Week poll for his score against Newcastle Falcons last weekend, made his first-team debut in 2008.

Guy Thompson and Gareth Owen come into the team this week and interim head coach Geordan Murphy includes England Under-20s forwards Joe Heyes and Sam Lewis among 12 Tigers academy graduates in the matchday squad.

Murphy said: “We showed a real intent against Newcastle last week, especially in the first half, and the onus is on us to carry that forward into the whole game. It was a good win but there is plenty to work on. Now we’ve got another tough game against a quality Wasps side.

“We’ve got a really competitive group of players and a lot of guys have put their hands up for selection over the last few weeks.”
