Report | Tigers Women's win big at home

Figure image

Leicester Tigers Women's continued their unbeaten streak in this season's Women's Championship North 1 with a 57-0 victory over Kenilworth at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Sunday afternoon.

In front of a vocal home crowd, Tigers ran in nine tries to make it 15 wins from 15 starts in the 2022/23 league campaign.

After scoring her debut try in last weekend's record-breaking 111-point win over Harrogate, Amy Relf chalked off another milestone with her first five-pointer at home when she dived over just two minutes in to the match.

Molly Draycott's first of what would be six successful conversions for the match made it a 7-0 lead before a try for Louisa Burgham a handful of minutes later was extended to 12-0.

Burgham, who still had plenty to do out wide to finish, was the beneficiary of a dominant scrum and some impressive hands to shift the ball wide, quickly, and give the outside back the opportunity to score.

Lucy Nye was the next to add her name to the scoresheet when, against the feed, the Leicester scrum pushed Kenilworth off their own ball 5m out from their try-line and Kat Turner broke from the back of the pack before popping up a pass for her scrum-half.

The try was converted and lead out to 19-0 before the goal-kicker, Draycott, made it 26-0 only minutes, if not seconds, later.

Almost immediately from the re-start, Draycott had the Mattioli Woods Welford Road crowd on their feet with a dazzling, 60m run after being gifted a brilliant ball from Georgia Westwood inside the home side's half.

The full-back danced her way through and then around the Kenilworth defence to cross, before converting her own score to see Leicester lead 26-0 at the break.

Tigers didn't take long to add to their half-time tally when Westwood barged over for the side's fifth in the early stages of the second-half.

The Leicester lock ran a rampaging line off the shoulder of fellow forward Turner, who offloaded at the line after running her own support line off Nye from a quick-tap just yards from the Kenilworth line.

Draycott's conversion from in front made it 33-0 with more than half an hour remaining.

The home side's bench began to make an impact and, after being injected in to the backline at half-time, Katie Childs crossed for the first of what would be a brace for the centre, which bookended a try for fellow replacement Zoë Evans.

The double for Childs on either side of the long-range effort from Evans made it a half-century for the home team before - in what would be the final play of the game - Morgan Richardson finished off a sweeping move to the left in attack when the back-rower was gifted a clear run to the line to dive over for the ninth and final try of the game.

Draycott's final conversion of the match, making it a personal haul of 17 points, capped off the 57-0 win.

Natasha Jones captains the side with Roisin McBrien and Lucy Nye named as vice-captains.

It's the same half-back pairing as the last home match, with Amy Relf back at fly-half after slotting in at scrum-half last weekend, whilst Lucy Nye is back after overcoming a niggling injury. Natasha Jones and Abi Gordon pair up in the centres for the first time this season.

In the back-three, Charlotte Daley returns to the side after suffering an injury in the win over Worcester in January, Molly Draycott moves from the wing to full-back after her five-try haul, whilst Louisa Burgham retains her spot after a brace.
