Dusty Hare

  • Date of Birth29 Nov 1952
  • BirthplaceNewark, Nottinghamshire

William Henry ‘Dusty’ Hare is rugby’s world record points scorer with a phenomenal total of 7,191 points. To put into context, his position in the rugby pantheon, the record he broke in 1981 stood at 3,651 points – less than half of Hare’s final total.

As his world record-holder status approaches a fourth decade, Hare is up there with any list of the game’s greatest-ever players.

He collected 4,507 of those points in 394 games as a Leicester Tiger between 1976 and 1989, and stands seventh on the club’s all-time appearance list.

The statistics are spectacular, but there was also more to Hare’s game. A speedy burst from full-back into a backline attack and intelligent reading of the game brought him 87 tries for Tigers and countless ‘assists’ for teammates.

Capped by England and the British Lions.
