From a farming family in Norfolk, Jack van Poortvliet attended Tigers Rugby Camps at North Walsham RFC before joining the club’s DPP and academy system.
“North Walsham is my local club, it’s only about 10 minutes from home,” he says, “and that is where I got into rugby.”
Originally a fly-half, Jack now plays at scrum-half.
“I enjoy how busy you are at scrum-half,” the Oakham School student says. “You’re always getting hands on the ball and always involved in the game.”
Norfolk DPP coach Tim Malone and former Tigers hooker Troy Thacker played an important part in Jack’s progress through the academy system.
“Tim had a big impact on my rugby when I joined the Norfolk DPP and helped me through the process to reach the academy,” he says. “And Troy has been great, not so much on the positional stuff because he was a hooker, but more on the values of the game.”
