A big-name signing in the summer of 2016, Matt Toomua arrived in Leicester with more than 30 Test caps and significant success in Australian rugby.

Signed directly from school by the Brumbies – only the second man to make such a move, the first being former Tigers flanker Julian Salvi – Toomua was first choice at fly-half by the time they reached the 2013 Super Rugby Final, their first since 2004.

He also started the historic win against the British & Irish Lions that year and broke into the Test ranks.

Toouma, who has Samoan heritage and was brought up in Melbourne and Brisbane, made his Brumbies debut in his first season out of school in 2008 and had two seasons in the Australia Under-20s squad, reaching the IRB World Cup Final in Argentina in 2010. He also spent a month in the Currie Cup with Western Province before returning to the Brumbies.

His debut for the Wallabies in a midweek match against Cardiff Blues lasted just four minutes before being cut short by a broken jaw and his first Test appearance came in the 2013 Championship against New Zealand.

Toomua was unlucky in his first year at Tigers, suffering a season-ending knee injury in the win over Racing 92 just a week after his debut against Glasgow in the Champions Cup. But he returned to play a major role in 2017/18 when he was named Supporters’ Player of the Year and included in the Premiership Team of the Season.

Matt is married to Ellyse Perry, an Australia cricket and football international.
