Leicester’s record tryscorer with 206 from 318 appearances, Percy Lawrie’s mark is approaching a century without equal.

Born in Lutterworth in 1888, Lawrie followed older brother Harry into the Tigers first team, playing at wing and centre.

He was Leicester’s top tryscorer for six successive seasons and his totals for appearances and tries could have been considerably more but for losing four years of his career to the First World War.

Captain in 1911-14 and 1920-23, only Martin Johnson has led Tigers in more than his 165 games, and represented Leicestershire, the Midlands and then England in two games against Scotland in 1910 and ’11.

Lawrie later spent 30 years on the county committee and died just before kick-off in the 1956 match against the Barbarians at the age of 68. A third member of the Lawrie family, Percy’s son Gordon, made four appearances for Tigers in 1938.
