Leicester Tigers fan Alix Wood is preparing to begin a 230-mile fundraising trek from Cornwall to Welford Road.

Alix sets off on her epic walk from Launceston Rugby Club tomorrow and will arrive at Tigers' home ground in time for kick off for the first Welford Road game of the season against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday, September 19.

Alix, a 46-year-old mother of two, aims to raise money for the Matt Hampson Trust.

She said: "It has been a long time in the planning and training and now I am looking forward to it.

"I was looking for a challenge. We live in Cornwall, we are Tigers fans and we drive up to games. I thought it was a good way to link in with Tigers and the Matt Hampson Trust."

Her husband Kevin said: "Alix has been a Tigers fans since she was a small girl. Matt is so impressive and she was saying as a rugby fan she felt an obligation to give something back and this is her way of doing it."

Alix will leave Launceston Rugby Club at 9am on Sunday, when she will be waved off by members of the club's junior section.

"I have trained a lot over the summer," she said. "I have had a 20-week training programme, I don't want to not make it."

Roy Jackson, chairman of the Matt Hampson Trust fundraising committee and Tigers director, said he was amazed at Alix's fundraising effort.

"It never ceases to amaze me the lengths that people go to in order to support Matt and walking from Cornwall to the Midlands is extraordinary," he said.

"Matt is really looking forward to welcoming Alix to Welford Road and everyone at the club wishes her the best of luck."

Alix has already received pledges for more than £1,500. To add your donation or for more information visit www.alixwood.co.uk/wfm.htm
