Blommetjies keen to express himself

Clayton Blommetjies is enjoying life in Tiger Town and, after two impressive performances for the club’s Premiership Shield team since arriving in Leicester from PRO14 side Scarlets, is pressing for selection in the team to face Bristol Bears on Saturday afternoon at Welford Road.

The former South Africa Sevens representative crossed for a hat-trick in the Shield loss to Northampton over the Easter weekend, with his ability to find space and fancy footwork on show for all at Franklin’s Gardens.

Among those to have enjoyed what they saw of the 28 year old was Tigers head coach Geordan Murphy, who has been impressed with the diligent “Blommetjies” since he arrived.

“He [Clayton] did a really good job [at Wanderers],” said Murphy.

“It is difficult to come into a team very late in the season and getting up to speed with us but he has been diligent with his work.

“He’s a good guy to have around and with injuries in the back three maybe slots are available at the weekend against Bristol

“It’s nice having players available and a selection debate … it is not something we have always had this season.”

Speaking about the game, Blommetjies said: “To be honest with you, I just loved being back on the field – that’s the rugby player’s dream.”

“I just want to be out there, expressing myself.

“We could have done a little better, the game was in our hands, but some stupid mistakes cost us in the end.”

However, while Murphy suggested a Premiership debut is a possibility, Blommetjies says it’s not something occupying his mind.

“I’m not thinking about it, it is not my choice to make,” he said.

“I just want to enjoy myself whenever I get the chance to be out on the field playing.

“Selection is something for the coaches upstairs to think about.”

The South African born speedster did say that if given the chance, he will give his all.

“If I am to get time in the Premiership I will give my absolute everything,” said Blommetjies.

“Of course if I get the chance, I will do all I can and bring my best for the team.

“It’s all about mind set.

“Once you go over that white line on game day, you have to say the ball is ours and I want the ball.”
