Burns welcomes Welford Road 'honour'

Summer signing Freddie Burns says he's looking forward to his first appearance at Welford Road as a Leicester Tigers player after pulling the shirt on for a first time last weekend.

England international fly-half Burns played in Saturday’s pre-season win over Edinburgh at Melrose and now hopes to have a first run-out on his new home ground when Cardiff Blues visit Tigers this Friday (7.30pm).

Asked about the opportunity to sample Welford Road as a home player rather than a visitor, Burns said: “I can’t wait. It is such a great stadium, a famous rugby stadium, and to run out in Leicester colours will be a huge honour.

“I hope my performances can win over the supporters pretty soon and I’m just looking forward to getting out there.”

Burns moved to Leicester from Gloucester this summer and said: “All the guys have been great in helping me settle in. You can try to fit in when you’re training but you really get that trust and honesty when you put your body on the line for the guys and I’m looking forward to the start the season.”

Burns came through an hour of Saturday’s 11-10 win at Edinburgh and will look for some more gametime against the Blues before the Aviva Premiership season opens against Newcastle Falcons at Welford Road on Saturday, September 6 (3pm).

“It was good to get a run-out,” he said. “It’s a shame we couldn’t convert possession in the right areas of the field into points but hopefully we can build on that next week.

“I love Gloucester as a club, I won’t have a bad word said about them, but it felt the right decision to come here. When you’re new to a club you have got to throw yourself right into it and that is what I’m trying to do.”

Tickets for the fixture against Cardiff Blues on Friday and against Newcastle Falcons on September 6 are available from the Tigers ticket office now.
