Castro named Lumbers player of the month

Martin Castrogiovanni says his stirring try against London Irish helped him land the Lumbers Player of the Month Award for March.

Leicester Tigers tighthead Castrogiovanni won the most votes from club supporters in an online poll at www.lumbers.co.uk for the prize.

The Italy international scored his first try of the season in the 35-19 win over London Irish at Welford Road at the start of March.

The try came in a man-of-the-match performance in front of the Sky Sports cameras and he admits it could have won him a few votes.

“I think it helped me a lot, to be honest,” he said. “I think for a prop to score a try when you are more than five metres then it is something you can enjoy for a long time. Hopefully I will get another one like it!

“I always leave everything on the field to make the shirt I represent win. When people recognised that it is really important.”

Castrogiovanni joins this season’s previous winners Dan Cole, Toby Flood, Ben Youngs, Billy Twelvetrees, Tom Croft and Craig Newby. They are all in contention for the Tigers Player of the Season award and the chance to be awarded a Graham watch by Lumbers.

Dominic Gomersall, managing director of Lumbers, said: “I’m not sure which the crowd enjoyed the most, Castro’s great try or the even better celebration! Either way I think Castro's continual work at the coal face of rugby endears him to an educated rugby audience that we, at the Tigers, possess.”
