Coach education scheme kicks off at Tigers

Tigers launched a new coach development programme this week open to all coaches and based on the success of the club's Academy.

Around 40 coaches from Leicestershire clubs and schools attended the opening Coach Education workshop at Welford Road.

Entitled 'An Extended Warm-up, the Principles of Movement Literacy,' the two-hour session was led by Academy athletic performance manager Kevin Mannion and included theory and practical demonstrations from Academy players.

The sessions are devised and run to help coaches get the most out of their players, at any level, including seniors, taking the successful programmes from the Tigers Academy to the clubs.

Shane Fox, a Level 2 coach from Coalville RFC, said: “What we have learned tonight will take us so far forward.

“Some key points came up and it wasn’t a case of being told what to do – tonight has got us thinking about what we do with our players and has answered a lot of questions.”

Ben Field, a coach from Ashby RFC, added: “I really liked the way the room was full of different people coaching at different levels and different age-groups, and there were bits to put into your coaching sessions, whoever you are.

“Kev Mannion has an outstanding knowledge of his subject and a passion for it – if you haven’t got that kind of passion then you are not going to be able to do it properly.”

The next Coach Education Session at Welford Road is in October and based on the Catch and Pass, with further sessions to follow in the new year.

Tigers are also staging a Talent Identification and Professional Rugby Development Conference at Welford Road in December, providing an unbeatable opportunity to hear from decision-makers at the country’s most successful club.

Bookings are open now to all interested coaches. Book at the Tigers ticket office or click here to book online.
