Cockerill happy as Tigers reach final countdown

The Leicester Tigers players this week put the finishing touches to the preparations for the new season with director of rugby Richard Cockerill pleased with their progress so far.

Tigers played their final warm-up fixture on Friday, recording a 37-14 victory over Welford Road visitors Leinster and have a full week's training ahead of the big kick-off at Northampton Saints next Sunday.

Cockerill saw his team run in five tries against Leinster, completing an Irish double after victory over Munster a week earlier, but now attentions are totally on the build-up to Franklin’s Gardens.

“We’re pleased with lots of aspects of the performance,” Cockerill said after Friday’s final whistle. “We just need to tidy up a few things and work on a few details.

“In the first half we were a bit loose with the ball and there was too much turnover ball. But the set-piece was good and strong and we scored some nice tries.

“It was good to get a run-out at Welford Road in the final week before the start of the league season and it was good to see the home support again.

“There were good parts of the game but next week it is for keeps and we hope some of our detail is a bit better.

“We’ll have a full training week and it will not be easy.”

Cockerill took particular pleasure in seeing the whole squad make a contribution in Friday's fixture against a Leinster side short of their senior Irish internationals.

“There was some good stuff from a lot of the guys,” he said. “We are in a good place, there are some tough selection choices to be made and we picked up no more injuries, which is nice.”

Tigers open the Aviva Premiership Rugby season with a short trip to Northampton on Sunday, then host newly-promoted Exeter Chiefs at Welford Road on Saturday, September 11 (kick-off 5.30pm). Tickets are available now.

Season tickets are also still available, with prices starting from £280 for adults. This is the best way to guarantee your place at the best-supported club in UK rugby.
