Internal competition driving performance

Brett Deacon and Richard Wigglesworth both praised the efforts of the entire Leicester Tigers squad when they spoke to LTTV following the win over Wasps at Mattioli Woods Welford Road in Round 10 of the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership season.

Assistant coach Deacon believes the "hunger to compete" for a place in the team is helping to contribute to a new found spirt within the squad.

Speaking after the Round 10 win over Wasps at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, Deacon said: "It's massive and that's the thing we have pushed, to make it competitive every single training session."

"All that we do has a competition element to it."

When asked about the contribution to a performance like Saturday's of those members of the group who were not selected as part of the matchday squad, Deacon praised the "outstanding" effort of the non-23.

"They have been outstanding, those guys who haven't been playing," he told LTTV.

"The hunger to compete, day in and day out, is always there and that puts the whole team, squad in a good place.

"We have to continue to improve and get better and that competition within the group helps."

Saturday's skipper Wigglesworth echoed Deacon's thoughts when he was asked about the effort of the non-matchday squad following the win.

Tom Youngs spoke about it in the dressing room [on Saturday], the guys who weren’t starting were the better team [last week]," Wigglesworth told LTTV.

"That prepares you well because it shows where you need to focus and the areas they exposed you.

“They’re a massive part of it. The guys off the bench today were outstanding too.

“It was properly a squad effort and something for us to acknowledge going forward.”
