Crane makes a move forward with Saxons

Jordan Crane enjoyed a rare run-out in the second row as England Saxons beat Portugal 66-0 on Friday evening.

The Leicester Tigers back-rower, capped at senior level this season at No.8, was moved to lock for the opening Saxons international of the season, lining up alongside Tigers colleagues Harry Ellis, Dan Cole, Tom Varndell and Matt Smith in the matchday 22.

“It was interesting playing at second row, and I managed to get a few carries in,” said Crane.

“If that’s where they want me to play, I’ll certainly give it a crack and see how it goes.

“I thought it was a good performance from the tight five, but we’ll be tested a lot more next week against an Ireland A team that’s pretty experienced. The Portuguese were physical but our fitness and skills showed in the end.”

Crane was among the try-scorers, with club colleagues Ellis (2), Varndell (2) and Smith – with his first touch of the ball at this level – joining him.

“It was a nice to see the Leicester boys getting on the scoreboard, but it was a massive team effort and the way the boys have gelled this week is a credit to the coaches,” added Crane.

England Saxons play Ireland A at Donnybrook on Friday (7.30pm). The squad for the match will be named on Monday.
