European preview: Tigers v Treviso

After wins in the opening four rounds of the European Champions Cup, Leicester Tigers host Benetton Treviso in Round 5 at Welford Road on Saturday evening (7.45pm).

Tigers sit on top of Pool 4 with an unbeaten record after four games, but Stade Francais remain hot on their tail with just four points separating the teams following victory for the French champions against Munster last weekend.

The outcome of the return fixture between Stade and Munster in Ireland on Saturday will have a big say in the pool too, meaning every point is vital at Welford Road if Tigers are to maintain momentum in a push for a place in the quarter-finals.

“We’ve worked hard to get into a position to contest the top spot in the pool, but the work is not finished yet,” said director of rugby Richard Cockerill, a veteran of five European Cup Finals with Tigers as player and coach.

“Treviso will make it tough, we know that from our own experience. We’ve met them regularly in the last few seasons and they are always a hard team to play against.”

Team news is announced from both camps at noon on Friday.

Tigers will be without Owen Williams and Brendon O’Connor after they picked up injuries in the league win over Northampton Saints last weekend, but Cockerill said: “We have to trust our squad and our systems, and we have to be mentally right because this is a big game with just one more to come in the pool stages, in Paris next weekend.”

Saturday’s match will be a 10th meeting of the two teams in the last eight seasons. Only Leinster Rugby have faced Tigers more often in European competition, with the Irish side locking horns with Leicester 11 times in the history of the elite tournament.

Kick-off on Saturday is at 7.45pm. If you don’t have a ticket, you can keep up to date via the Tigers website and social media pages. This match is also broadcast live by BT Sport 1.
