Franklin's Gardens given reasons to cheer

Northampton may have finished the 2006/07 season as the Guinness Premiership's bottom club, but they did receive some better news courtesy of Tigers' fans.

In a long-running poll on this website, Tigers supporters voted for Franklin's Gardens as their favourite away ground in last year's Premiership. Northampton's purpose-built stadium finished comfortably above its nearest rivals, totalling 22.3% of the vote.

Bath's Recreation Ground finished second, just above Gloucester's Kingsholm, with the two West Country rivals polling 14.3% and 11.1% respectively. London Irish's Madejeski Stadium finished a creditable fourth but the remainder of the shared football and rugby grounds faired far less favourably. Saracens' Vicarage Road propped up the pile, with Sale's Edgeley Park, Bristol's Memorial Stadium and Wasps' Adams Park finishing directly above the stadium Sarries share with Championship football club Watford.

With future redevelopments a talking point at a number of the country's leading rugby clubs, it will be interesting to see whether Franklin's Gardens remains top dog for years to come. One thing is for certain however, the 2007/08 poll will have a new favourite, as Saints' relegation means Tigers supporters will be missing out on a chance to enjoy Northampton's home for the forthcoming premiership season at least.
