Geordan Murphy says he is looking forward to welcoming his friend and former teammate Martin Castrogiovanni back to Welford Road in next season's European Rugby Champions Cup.

Leicester Tigers have been drawn against Castrogiovanni’s club RC Toulon, the current European and French champions, in the pool stages of the competition.

Ulster Rugby and Scarlets will join Toulon and Tigers in Pool 3 after today’s draw in Neuchatel, Switzerland, the base for organisers European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR.

Murphy, Tigers’ leading appearance maker and top try-scorer in Europe, lined up alongside Castrogiovanni for seven seasons with the club, including for the 2009 European Cup Final in Edinburgh.

Now part of the Tigers coaching staff, Murphy says he is looking forward to welcoming his close friend back to the club when Tigers and Toulon meet in next season’s competition.

“It will be good to see Castro back at Welford Road,” said Murphy, who famously lifted the Aviva Premiership trophy with Castrogiovanni in 2013 after their final game as Tigers players. “And I know that the crowd will be pleased and excited about seeing him back.

“I am sure our fans will be excited about the prospect of seeing world-class players from across the world coming to play at Welford Road with Toulon, Ulster and Scarlets. And the fans will be licking their lips at the away trips as well.

“It’s a tough group but an exciting group as well. You want to be playing and testing yourself against the biggest and best teams.

“Toulon won Europe and the Top 14, Ulster and Scarlets have a strong pedigree in Europe and have been building over the last few years with some exciting players.

“It’s going to be a strong competition.”
