Great to be back says new dad Marcos

Marcos Ayerza touched down back in Leicester this week after missing the opening weeks of the Tigers season due to international duty and the birth of his baby daughter.

Loosehead prop Ayerza played for Argentina in the Rugby Championship and stayed in South America for his sister’s wedding and then the birth of his first child last week before flying back to the UK.

“I am a very happy man,” said Marcos, reflecting on life as a first-time father and the opportunity to return to work at Tigers.

“It is great to be back at Leicester which is like a home to me because I have been here for a while now. It is a long time since I left Leicester at the end of last season. And I didn’t play from April until the summer after my injury against Toulon.”

Marcos and his wife Mercedes welcomed their baby girl, also Mercedes, last week before he headed back to England.

“It is brilliant, although I only had a few days with her before I came back here,” he said. “They will be with me soon and I’m glad everything went well and she is a healthy baby girl.”

Ayerza played in five of Argentina’s games in the Rugby Championship and now has 45 caps for the Pumas.

“It was a very tough tournament but it is good for Argentina to keep gathering experience in the tournament, playing at the highest level of rugby,” he said. “It all contributes to Argentina’s development and we take many positives from it.”

Argentina are back in action during the autumn period with Tests against England, Wales and Italy. But first he has a Leicester focus with fixtures against London Wasps on Sunday and at home to Harlequins next Saturday.
