Following a board meeting of Premier Rugby in Twickenham on Thursday, the Guinness Premiership clubs unanimously agreed to the appointment of Martin Johnson as the fourth Premier Rugby representative on the Professional Game Board.

During his eight seasons of Premiership rugby, Martin captained Tigers to four successive titles from 1999 to 2002 and back-to-back Heineken Cup victories in 2000 and 2001. He retired from playing in June 2005.

Martin won 84 England caps, of which 39 were as captain including the 2003 Rugby World Cup victory in Sydney. He is also the only player to have captained two successive British and Irish Lions tours, in 1997 and 2001.

Mark McCafferty, Chief Executive of Premier Rugby said: "We are extremely pleased that Martin has agreed to join the Professional Game Board. It is clear that his substantial experience will be a great asset."

Johnson himself added: "I am delighted with the opportunity to be a part of the Board at the start of what I believe will be a new era of success for English rugby."
