Johnno prepared for Matt Hampson Bowl

The Matt Hampson Bowl takes place at Welford Road tomorrow afternoon, with Tigers legend Martin Johnson set to play a starring role.

Johnson will be part of the Leicester Panthers side that takes on the Loughborough Aces in what will be the biggest American Football match to take place in the UK so far this year.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Johnno's team mates have already been mightily impressed with the World Cup winning captain's performances.

"We've been training at Oval Park on Sunday afternoons and Johnno's been down to most of those training sessions," says Dave Hagger of the Panthers. "He'll be playing defensive tackle and he may also have a guest appearance on the offence at tight end. We've had a couple of practice games and he's impressed big time. We played a division two team called Shropshire Revolution in what's called an organised scrimmage where each team has a set number of plays. That went really well, then we had a fantastic game recently against a Combined Universities team. He's also been immense in practice.

"When we decided to get back together and have one last game, we spoke with Johnno  and said we were thinking of reforming to play the Loughborough Students. He came to the first meeting after Roy Jackson had suggested we play the game at Welford Road to raise funds for Matt and it all just fell in to place.

Hagger, who praised Tigers for their involvement, is keen for as many supporters to get down to the ground for what should be a truly unique occasion.

"Tigers have been brilliant in giving us the stadium, the European Suite for a meal afterwards and Oval Park for our training, and helping with issues such as ticketing. Now we want the old Panthers fans of which we had a core of about 1,000-2,000 to be there on Monday, plus we're hoping that Tigers fans come down to see Johnno play one more game at Welford Road."

The match kicks-off at 3pm, with tickets just £5 and 14s and under getting in free.

Tickets can be purchased in person from the Welford Road ticket office or by calling 08701 28 34 30.
