Leicester Tigers landed a double at the Leicester Mercury Sports Awards this week.

After picking up the Guinness Premiership trophy and reaching the final of the Heineken Cup for a fifth time, Tigers were named Leicester Mercury Team of the Year.

And back-rower Tom Croft was named Mercury Sportsman of the Year after starring with Tigers, England and the British & Irish Lions.

Head coach Richard Cockerill accepted the Team of the Team trophy and said: “On behalf of the team, I’d like to thank everyone involved in the Mercury Sports Awards.

“The thing that sets us apart is that we are a real part of the community.

“We have a fantastic support base and the association the fans have with the players is enormous.

“We would be nothing without the supporters.”

Pipping last year’s winner Rendall Munroe and county cricketer James Taylor for the Sportsman of the Year award, Croft said: “It’s an honour – and something to cheer me up a bit after my injury.”

Croft also handed over the prize for Under-19 Team of the Year, won by Hinckley RFC Colts after winning national honours in their age-group.
