Pitch protected for Sunday's big game

The Welford Road pitch is covered and protected against the wintry weather expected ahead of Sunday's Heineken Cup match against Perpignan.

The forecast predicts falling temperatures, but the Tigers playing surface will remain under cover until matchday.

Charles Rayner, head of stadium operations, said: “The pitch is in excellent condition beneath the covers and there is no frost in it because we have kept it protected during the cold weather.

“We have monitored the weather forecast and extra covers have been put in place.

“Also, as part of our arrangements with Premiership Rugby, the large canopy which proved so successful last season has been brought in. This will further protect the pitch, and warm-air blowers will be used if temperatures fall any further.

“We do not anticipate any problems even with the temperatures forecast.”

Crews are in place to clear any ice from around the stadium, including the area of the Christmas market outside the Caterpillar Stand which is open from 10am on Sunday.

Tickets for Sunday’s game, kick-off at 3pm, are available now from the Tigers ticket office.
