Leicester Tigers players visited De Montfort University on Tuesday in the build-up to this year's Varsity rugby matches.

The annual event, which takes place next Wednesday (March 22) at Welford Road, will see men’s and woman’s first teams from De Montfort University and the University of Leicester go head to head.

Tigers players Ed Slater, George Catchpole, Tom Brady and Oli Bryant visited players at De Montfort to offer some advice.

The group took part in a question-and-answer session on all aspects of the game from preparing for big matches to the psychology behind the sport.

Sam Wheeler, sports projects officer at DMU, said: “What a way to spend an evening. Both our teams are eagerly anticipating next week’s grudge matches and to have the opportunity to get some advice from the pros is a real privilege.

“Being able to play the fixtures under the lights at Welford Road brings a real sense of occasion and the atmosphere is always electric. We’re keen to end the University of Leicester’s winning streak and, hearing how players at the highest level prepare for big matches, we’re hoping gives our teams the motivation and confidence to take to the pitch.

“It’s great to have a name like Leicester Tigers behind our Varsity event and every year the crowds continue to get bigger.”

Tickets for the 2017 Varsity Matches are £5 in advance, available from De Montfort Student Union Reception and participating teams or online at www.demontfortsu.com/rugbyvarsity . Admission on the night is £7.50.

Gates opening at 6.00pm, the women’s match is a 6.15pm kick-off, with the men to follow at 8.05pm.
