Elite coach Rob Tarr says the Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Team can take plenty of positives from their campaign at the Bernd Best Tournament, the world's biggest wheelchair rugby competition.Tigers finished sixth in the tournament, which saw them take on teams from across Europe.
They kicked off with a 44-39 victory over defending champions and league rivals West Coast Crash to get their campaign off to the best possible start.
Tigers faced European champions Nacka Spiders from Sweden in game two and took a three-point lead during the first quarter. However, Tigers’ momentum stalled, not helped by the loss of two of their main ball-handlers to injury and sickness, and they eventually lost 59-44.
The Tigers team then faced French side Les Mousquetaires, who produced an outstanding performance to secure a 59-45 victory.
Tigers rallied and produced one of their performances of the tournament to see off Prague Robots 69-49 to set up a fifth/sixth-place play-off with Switzerland’s Cheesy Boys. It was a closely-fought game with the Swiss side emerging 42-40 victors.
Tarr said: “We have a lot of hard work ahead of us and the coaches and players need to take away the positives and negatives from the weekend and build on them to make us a stronger unit.
“Congratulation to all, you have shown that you can play against the best teams in Europe and hold your heads up high.”
The Tigers Wheelchair Team are holding their first-ever open trials for prospective new players on Sunday, April 12.
They are inviting anyone with an upper and lower limb impairment who would like to be part of the team to come and have a go at the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Leisure Centre, Duns Lane, Leicester between 9am and noon.
No experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided on the day.
