The Investec Champions Cup is here, and Leicester Tigers look to get off to a quick start in Pool 4 this Sunday against DHL Stormers at Mattioli Woods Welford Road.

Tigers have been drawn in this year’s definitive ‘Pool of Death’ alongside back-to-back Champions, La Rochelle; back-to-back runners up, Leinster; Stade Francais; Sale and Sunday’s opponents from Cape Town.

Note: Leicester won’t face their Premiership friends up north in the group stages.

The quality in the pool makes Sunday’s clash all the more important, with a trip to Paris to take on Stade Francais looming.

TEAM NEWS

The visitors have named a changed side for their first ever visit to Mattioli Woods Welford Road. There is space for fullback Clayton Blommetjies who made two appearances for Leicester in 2019.

Tigers head coach, Dan McKellar has named a strong side for the Sunday clash, with seven players playing in their first Investec Champions Cup fixture for the club.

STATS AND FACTS

Leicester have played nine previous matches against South African opponents, with just two defeats both at Welford Road: to South African Forces in 1919 and the South African Barbarians in 1993.

The last time Tigers played a South African clubside was when Golden Lions visited Welford Road in a match to open the south stand in November 1995 with Leicester winning 39-14.

The only occasion Leicester have met a team from the Cape was when they beat Gardens Tech 25-0 at Oranjezicht, Cape Town in August 1993.
